Why am I adding a blog post about this? Will first of all suggestions would be nice! I am hoping that a title will come out of spending time with survivors, but if you have a stroke of brilliance I'd be thrilled to about it.
More importantly though, my friend Martha suggested the change to indicate the ownership of survivors in this cookbook. Though the idea of ownership has been in the front of my mind while thinking about this project, I have failed to articulate it. The true authors of this book and even of the upcoming blog posts will be the survivors. In a sense I am simply an editor, journalist or conduit to share the recipes and the stories I look forward to gathering.
Whatever the outcome of this project be it a few more blog posts or a full blown cookbook, I want survivors, their families and members of their Diasporas be proud of it. I want them to be excited to share it with each other and the communities around them.
I define for The Survivor's Cookbook if it starts new and fresh conversations about genocide and culture. An even bigger success would be if many of those conversations include the powerful voices of survivors themselves.
